Angel bread

Saw this video today of Panis Angelicus, sung by Andrea Bocelli at Santa Maria sopra Minerva (where Catherine of Siena and Fra Angelico are buried) ....

Actually, not all of St Catherine of Siena is buried in Santa Maria Sopra Minerva. Her head is on an altar in the Church of St Dominic in Siena.

Hi Liam,

That's so weird :) I think Francis Xavier's arm is somewhere else than his body too. It's like the reverse of when a traitor would be quartered and parts sent to different towns.

Thank you for my Panis Angelicus fix for this afternoon. I've been rather obsessed by the Renee Fleming version I posted on my blog, and have been singing along (and alone, thank goodness) in an effort to get my voice in shape for Christmas caroling. My goal is to reach F# effortlessly. This may take a while. Like Christmas caroling 2011.

Do you know when the Bocelli video was made? He looks thinner than usual, and his voice seemed a tad unstable in spots. Beautiful, though. It's always beautiful.

Hi Susan,

I didn't even know what Panis Angelicus was until I saw your post :)

I don't know when he did that video but the cd/dvd at Amazon says it was made in 2003. I guess critics don't really like him much, but he's very popular with listeners, maybe in part because he's blind?

Possibly. But his voice has a lot of appeal. A certain sweetness. This isn't his best effort, I don't think. Although others might disagree.

Did you check out the Pavarotti/Sting version I posted? Definitely different! I would say it took a lot of guts on Sting's part to do that. I found it oddly moving.

I did :) Yeah, I was a little surprised Sting sounded so good compared to Pavarotti. I have a couple of his old songs on the computer .... must listen to them again sometime.
